There is no one method for attention deficit disorder diagnosis, and as a result, people with ADD are often missed by the system. I know. I was one. You see, as a child I suffered from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The problem was that I didn’t have enough of the warning signs.

I was getting good grades in my classes, and even though I had some behavioral problems, they were minor ones. I was smart, and good enough in class to get by in school without attention deficit disorder medication. As a result, I never had my attention deficit disorder diagnosed by a family physician.

Strangely enough, it was one of my friends who gave me the attention deficit disorder diagnosis. He had had childhood ADHD for many years, and he recognized the symptoms in me. The hyperactivity, the quick but disorganized thinking, and the inability to pay attention were all clear signs.

I went to the doctor and took an attention deficit disorder test. Sure enough, my friend had been right! Strangely enough, it was a 13-year-old who diagnosed me for ADD when my own family physician had missed it!

In my case, it wasn’t a big deal. As I said, I did fine in school even before my attention deficit disorder was diagnosed. For other children, however, not getting a timely attention deficit disorder diagnosis can be a big big problem. Sometimes, the parents fear serious behavioral our psychological problems.

Other times, the kids are just labeled no good troublemakers and develop low self-esteem as a result. This condition can be treated, but only if it is noticed. If it isn’t, these kids can grow thinking that they are just bad kids unable to get their school work done. This can have huge consequences, as you might imagine.

Once an attention deficit disorder diagnosis is made, the patient can go on to treatment. A lot of doctors prefer to just simply start patients on attention deficit disorder medication, figuring that it solves the problem. It doesn’t. Don’t get me wrong – Ritalin really helped me a lot, but what I really needed that I was never given was a class in how to organize my life. ADD is more than just a chemical imbalance.

Pills do help, but so does therapy and counseling. There are study strategies that children can learn, as well as biofeedback methods to help control the ADD.

Many professions evolve over time. Some career choices and skilled labor jobs have been eliminated due to technology, automation and moving from an agricultural to an industrial society. Technology has also created positions that were not heard of last century. Even core old professions have changed drastically over the past decade due to technology and our ever changing society. I have been reflecting upon this since a conversation I had with a good friend of mine who is a teacher.

I met this teacher when my children were in school. She is approaching the age of retirement so she has been spending some time reflecting on her career. She was telling me that thirty years ago when she first started teaching she had never heard of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Now she has several children each year that have been given this label. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder commonly referred to as ADHD is one of the most diagnosed disorders among children today. She feels that the disorder is over diagnosed and that for some children the issues is a learned behavior problem that can be corrected through behavior modification rather than medication, which is often used for attention deficit hyper activity disorder.

This teacher is involved in setting up individual educational plans, also referred to as an IEP, for half of her classroom. She feels that the ability to have harsher disciplinary measures for the entire student body would eliminate the need for many of the IEP’s.

ADHD is not the only diagnosis that many children with behavior issues are labeled with. Diagnosis’s from the spectrum of autistic disorders is on the rise also. We discussed the reason for the number of children having these labels and taking medications. We have decided that there has to be a correlation with the changing lifestyles of families along with the nutrition that all of us get. We eat so many more foods that have been processed with preservatives as well as additives. These chemicals have to have some type of effect.

Also there are so many people with an anti-authority attitude. Parents are more apt to use their energy taking on the school system than they are spending time helping to correct their child’s behavior. The result is that the child does not listen to the teachers and this is backed by the parents. This is opposite from when I was in school. If I was in trouble at school I was also in trouble at home. If my parents disagreed with the school, I never heard about it. We never had kids leaving the classroom to get their medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Today children have to form lines outside of the nurses office to get their morning and afternoon medications.

The attention deficit disorder diagnosis is getting to be very common among pediatricians nowadays, but it was not always so. Back when I was growing up, many doctors did not even know how to give an  attention deficit disorder test.

Kids with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder had a really hard time in school. Most of their teachers would usually think that they were just being lazy, and as a result, they would be marginalized in the classroom. As a matter of fact, societies attitudes have been so slow to change that this can still be a problem in some parts of the country. Still, slowly but surely, things are starting to change.

I did not get an attention deficit disorder test until I was in 8th grade. You see, I was one of the kids that slipped through the cracks. In some ways, I was pretty lucky. I was very smart, and good at my schoolwork, so even the few people who might have suspected ADHD were not aware that I had it.

Most kids with the condition get bad grades in school and have worse behavioral problems than I did. Nonetheless, it was still pretty tough for me. I always felt a little out of control, and it seemed like people shouted at me a lot for no reason.

When I finally got the attention deficit disorder test, it was a revelation. Looking at the attention deficit disorder testing questions, I saw a perfect description of myself and the problems that I went through on a daily basis. I had always thought that the problem was that I was just too lazy and not applying myself. Knowing that I had a condition that could be treated was wonderful for me. If I was sick, then I could get better!

I had thought that the attention deficit disorder test was the beginning of the end of my problems, but there was still a lot of work ahead of me. Attention deficit disorder tests can help you to see what is going wrong, but they can not fix it. Even so, my life did start to improve.

I got prescribed Ritalin, learned strategies to organize my life, and in general got a lot more help and understanding from the people around me. In the long term, that attention deficit disorder test was the beginning of a new phase in my life, one that was better than what came before it.
